- Background: Three types of arginine methylation exist in mammalian cells: monomethylarginine (MMA), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). Type I PRMTs ((CARM1, PRMT1, PRMT2, PRMT3, PRMT6, and PRMT8) catalyze ADMA, while type II PRMTs (e.g. PRMTs 5 and 7) catalyze SDMA. PRMT1 is the primary methyltransferase that deposits the ADMA mark, and it accounts for over 90% of this type of methylation. The Arg3 residue of Histone H4 is a target for PRMT1 methylation. Methylation of histone H4 at Arg3 is an important step in transcriptional activation, and allows for subsequent acetylation of H4 tails by p300.
