  • Background: MMP7 (also known as matrix metalloproteinase 7 or pump-1 protease) is a member of the large family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) responsible for the breakdown of extracellular matrix proteins such as casein, collagen, and fibronectin. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive pro-proteins and are activated when cleaved by other extracellular proteinases. MMP7 cleaves fibronectin, gelatin and elastin, but not collagen. MMPs are involved in tissue remodeling and in the escape of metastatic cells from the primary tumor and angiogenesis. MMP7 can activate MMP2 and MMP9, and upregulation of MMP7 is found in many carcinomas. They are candidate therapeutic targets in various diseases related to tissue remodeling including cancer and inflammatory diseases.
