An adenosine A1 receptor agonist; selectively binds adenosine A1 over A2A and A3 receptors (Kis = 0.85, 210, and 281 nM, respectively, for the rat receptors); increases survival and prevents neuronal damage in the hippocampal CA1 region in a gerbil model of bilateral carotid artery occlusion-induced cerebral ischemia at 75 µg/kg; protects against auditory threshold shifits and inner and outer hair cell loss in rats following noise exposure at 110 dB at 100 µg/kg
