Alpha Synuclein is a small protein that is highly soluble and lacks a defined structure. It is predominantly found in the brain, specifically in the presynaptic terminals of neurons. Its primary function is to facilitate the release of synaptic vesicles, which play a crucial role in signaling, particularly dopamine signaling that is essential for movement.
Research has demonstrated that alpha synuclein can aggregate and form various types of oligomeric and fibrillary structures. When alpha synuclein misfolds and forms soluble aggregates, it becomes neurotoxic and can propagate disease in a manner similar to prions. The term “synucleinopathies” encompasses a group of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), diffuse Lewy body disease (DLBD), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). In these conditions, the presence of misfolded alpha synuclein is responsible for the development of the diseases. The table below includes alpha synuclien proteins from Stressmarq Biosciences, as well as other popular proteins, that can be purchased on Scientist.com
