The VIB Protein Core offers solutions for producing mg to g amounts of research grade proteins, or to optimize expression vectors and production conditions. The services include scaling up of microbial cultures (5 or 20 L), mammalian cell cultures (up to 12 L), and downstream processing & purification adapted to those scales. The end-deliverable is usually a protein. Protein analytics are performed to guarantee the quality of the delivered protein. Most commom protein analytics (SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, UV280 nm, UV260 nm/280 nm, …) are done in house, SEC/UV/MALS/RI is standing here central to guarantee the folding of the protein. Other analytics are done in collaboration with specialized units (e.g. the VIB Proteomics Core for Mass Spectrometry). Additionally, protein-protein interactions can be measured by bio-layer interferometry (Octet Red) and stability can be tested by thermic titration on the Uncle (Tm & Tagg, isothermal stability, sizing & polydispersity, thermal recovery). Beyond servicing, scouting on new technologies and opportunities available on the market is done regularly by the VIB Protein Core. After the five-yearly internbational evaluation at the end of 2019, the VIB Protein Core was named one of the top academic protein production core facilities in Europe.
