Animal experiments enable us to analyze the functioning of the biological systems of the animal kingdom, based on studies on a living animal which is endowed with sensibility.

Most of our basic knowledge in biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology or pharmacology is derived from initial studies in animal models; These studies could not have been carried out in man for ethical and religious considerations. Since 1901, more than 80% of Nobel Prizes in medicine or physiology have been obtained for discoveries based on animal models.

Animal experimentation is a legal practice that takes place within a precise regulatory framework defining a field of action, the competencies required, an authority and control mechanisms. Its actors have put in place the means of its evaluation. Recently, a regulatory ethics framework has added to this framework an assessment of the ‘why’ and ‘how’ by representatives of the social body.

All animal facilities or user establishments (EU) of the University of Tours are grouped together in a Scientific and Technical Platform (PST) ‘Pet Shops’. This platform makes available to researchers many conventional pathological and / or transgenic animal models in rodent, rabbit or primate species. PST allows to develop a large number of methods: From minimally invasive methods based on imaging to classical in vivo procedures including surgery, from maintaining conventional lines to breeding specific lines.
