Owlstone Medical has developed and commercialized Breath Biopsy technology, a breathalyzer for disease capable of the reliable identification and analysis of biomarkers in exhaled breath, with the mission to become the global leader in non-invasive diagnostics for early detection and precision medicine. Breath Biopsy is now an established method that enables the reliable collection and analysis of a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on human breath. The company has run the world’s largest breath based clinical trials and has established the first high volume breath analysis lab with ISO 9001 certification and quality checks at every stage of the workflow. In addition to capabilities around biomarker discovery and validation, Owlstone have also developed miniaturized VOC detection technologies based on Field-Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometry (FAIMS) which have already been deployed for field based applications in military and industrial applications. Once suitable clinical biomarkers have been identified on breath, this same technology could be adapted as a cost effective, rapid, small footprint device for point of care or near patient testing.
