Headquarters:
Raleigh, NC, US
Company Type:
Academic Core Facility

The Biological Resources Facility (BRF) was established in 1997 to serve the research faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State University. July 1, 2013 the BRF and Tox Animal Facility were transferred to the newly formed College of Sciences (COS). The BRF houses a multitude of research animals including mice, rats, voles, frogs and fish. Toxicology Animal Facility houses mice.

The BRF is located on the North Campus of NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is situated adjacent to Gardner Hall and contains approximately 20,000 square feet. It is a modern, climate controlled, restricted access facility including office and administrative support space, a clinical laboratory, necropsy and preparation rooms and behavioral space. About one-fifth of the space in the BRF (level one) is devoted to the Department of Entomology within CALS.

Departments with research interests here are mostly within COS Biological Sciences. The BRF accommodates the research and teaching needs of about 20 faculty members at NC State, and works cooperatively with researchers from private industry and other governmental agencies.

The BRF allows the research endeavors of the COS faculty to be centralized. Centralization permits increased opportunities for collaboration among faculty members of different departments. It also prevents redundancy of research efforts and equipment, hence allowing devotion of resources to research. The BRF fulfills a valuable need in COS, providing a site for the humane care of research animals.

The facility was designed to house laboratory animals under conditions required by local and federal regulatory agencies. The BRF is regulated locally by the NC State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The BRF is equipped with a backup electrical supply and air-conditioning system to insure the welfare of the animals.

The BRF also operates a satellite facility on Centennial Campus. This facility support the research within Environmental Toxicology as well as provides space for College of Engineering, Biomedical Engineering.

Both facilities are served by a laboratory animal veterinarian who is based at the CVM, LAR unit. This Veterinarian provides weekly rounds and is available for animal health checks and research consults as requested.

The Research Operations Manager manages these facilities along with an isolation facility located at Yates Mill Research Center. Staff includes a Research Technician, Supervisor, 5 Research Technicians who provide animal care and an admin/bookkeeper.
