The National Laboratory Animal Center (NLAC) was established in 1994 as the first large-scale internationally-qualified supply unit for specific pathogen free (SPF) laboratory rodents. In June 2003, NLAC became an organization under the jurisdiction of the National Applied Research Laboratories. In April 2008, NLAC Tainan Facility was opened in the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) to expand the hardware facility of the NLAC.
In 2010 and 2013, both NLAC Taipei and Tainan Facility had been “fully accredited” by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International). With its comprehensive hardware facilities and software services, NLAC became the main supplier of high quality laboratory animal and service in Taiwan. Since 2011, NLAC also established off-site repository mechanisms for primary specie strains, which offered more reliable services for uses and lowered the risks of sterilization of precious experimental animal resources.
