Welcome to the Digital Electron Microscopy Facility (DEMF), IU School of Dentistry at IUPUI. We are a central Indiana laboratory with two electron microscopes that specialize in biological materials research.
The Digital Electron Microscopy Facility (DEMF) is located at the IU School of Dentistry on the IUPUI campus. Our JEOL 8900R Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA) and user-friendly JEOL Low Vacuum Scanning Electron Microscope (LV-SEM) are capable of imaging surface microstructures and mapping micro-chemical characteristics of a wide variety of biological and solid material specimens. Our instruments are capable of Secondary Electron (SE) and Backscattered Electron (BE) Imaging as well as both Energy Dispersive (EDS) and Wavelength Dispersive (WDS) compositional mapping. We specialize in the microanalyses of biomineralized tissues such as teeth and bone, but we are capable of analyzing virtually all solid materials. Preparation for biological, geological, and material specimens is also available upon request.
Located in the heart of the IUPUI’s campus near downtown Indianapolis, we are accessible to researchers and teachers throughout the Midwest, and we especially welcome collaborations that will challenge our capabilities. The purchase of the SEM and EPMA instruments was made possible by financial support from the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 9871243.
