As an important component of the Oral Health Research Institute, this facility has been extensively involved in OHRI’s caries research and studies. A substantial number of these investigations are conducted as the result of sponsored agreements with industry and the submission of protocols for research grants. The faculty/scientists work with sponsors to design specific protocols to meet individual sponsor needs.
The in vitro microbial caries models developed in the Microbial Caries Research Laboratory are used to study primary, secondary and root caries. These models are also used extensively for studying the anticariogenic and/or antimicrobial properties of toothpastes, dental materials, foods, antimicrobial agents, and remineralizing agents.
The facility is supported by the faculty and staff of the following programs at the Indiana University School of Dentistry’s Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry.
