The Illinois Institute of Technology has maintained a highly active research program in medical imaging since 1994. MIRC was formally established in 2004 with the mission of leading IIT’s efforts in research and education in the field of medical imaging. In 2007 MIRC moved into newly constructed space in IIT’s University Technology Park. MIRC is a collaborative workplace that is home to six faculty members in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, along with students, postdocs, and visiting scholars.
Our research emphasizes technological issues relating to medical imaging and its applications, including image processing, image analysis, image acquisition, kinetic modeling and machine learning.
We build devices, algorithms, and software methods for MRI, phase-contrast x-ray, mammography, CT, PET, SPECT, and fluorescence imaging to address diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and various forms of cancer. MIRC distributes shared tools such as the IIT Brain Atlas and the IIT 3D Breast Lesion Model.
