Our department is located in the Charles H. Townes Science Center. Dedicated in 2008, this $62.5 million facility houses all of the science departments at Furman. You’ll find cutting-edge research happening throughout this 200,000-square foot building.
As a biology student, you’ll have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment in a modern facility. Our space features a number of areas for specialized instruction and undergraduate research:
A large greenhouse adjacent to the Townes Science Center that is equipped with a tidal wetland aquatic waste water treatment system
A molecular assays core facility with darkroom, that provides instrumentation and expertise to faculty and students in several departments.
Aquatic biology laboratory with temperature-controlled aquaria and an indoor stream
Controlled-environment laboratory with eight reach-in environmental chambers.
An herbarium with more than 20,000 catalogued plant specimens
A 1,354 sq. ft. animal facility, overseen by a three faculty and a consulting veterinarian in accordance with the DHHS requirements and approved by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare of the NIH.
Separate, dedicated rooms for flourescence microscopy and radiosotope work
A walk-in cold room
Areas for individual and group study
Lab space for each of our faculty members
