The primary purpose of the Virology and Molecular Biomarkers Core is to provide standardized, highly sensitive viral quantification and characterization services at an economy of scale that are critical for the success of basic, translational, and clinical scientists in the Emory/Atlanta AIDS research community. The ultimate goal of the Core is to facilitate AIDS research programs aimed at understanding pathogenesis, preventing infection, and ultimately eradicating HIV. The Core has two primary laboratories that provide a comprehensive resource to support virology studies at any point along the spectrum of HIV/AIDS research, from Basic Science to Vaccine Development. The preclinical laboratory is located at Yerkes National Primate Research Center and provides a broad spectrum of virological and gene expression assays for investigators studying SIV/SHIV infection in nonhuman primates. The clinical laboratory is located at Woodruff Memorial building and provides HIV viral load quantification as well as assays related to HIV-associated diseases.
