The National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) was created in 1998 by the Institute of Health Carlos III, although it was founded by the Ministry of Health, the CNIO is integrated since the end of 2011 in the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness . The CNIO is managed by a foundation, created simultaneously with the Center, whose name is that of the Carlos III National Center for Cancer Research Foundation. The Foundation has the status of state – owned foundation and is governed by a Board . Center corresponds develop scientific activity and is headed by a Director and assisted by a Scientific Advisory Committee

The essential mission of the CNIO is to carry out research of excellence and to offer innovative technology in the field of cancer to the National Health System and to the National System of Science and Innovation. For this purpose, the strategic objectives of the CNIO are:

To carry out an investigation to obtain new and more effective methods of diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.
To transfer the scientific knowledge to the clinical practice, obtaining that the scientific advances repercuss as soon as possible on our sanitary system and, therefore, on the well-being of the patients.
Transfer the technology developed in the CNIO to innovative companies.
Establish a new and more effective management system in the European scientific field.
The CNIO is one of the few European cancer centers that destines its resources to basic and applied research under an integrated approach, favoring the interaction of basic research programs with those of molecular diagnosis and discovery of new drugs, all supported by a Solid equipment infrastructure and technical services.

The management system of the CNIO combines business flexibility, which derives from its founding nature, with the accounting rigor derived from its status as a state-owned foundation and from the control and justification of the public funds received.
