  • Bio Background: The product of this gene belongs to the ligand-gated ionchannel receptor superfamily. This gene encodes subunit A of thetype 3 receptor for 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin), a biogenichormone that functions as a neurotransmitter, a hormone, and amitogen. This receptor causes fast, depolarizing responses inneurons after activation. It appears that the heteromericcombination of A and B subunits is necessary to provide the fullfunctional features of this receptor, since either subunit aloneresults in receptors with very low conductance and responseamplitude. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encodingdifferent isoforms have been identified.
